CAPSTANComputer Aided Planning, Stowing And Networking. A computer aided graphic planning system for stowage on container ships |
CaptainThe person responsible for managing a ship. He is appointed by the shipowner (from the legal point of view he is not a member of the crew) and holds a master's certificate. He manages the ship in respect of nautical, technical and commercial aspects and in person. As a representative of the country whose flag is flown by the ship as well as in his capacity as a representative of his shipping company he is vested with authorisation and also bears extraordinary obligation and responsibility. It is differentiated between four different master's certificates: 1. AG = Captain on overseas voyages 2. AM = Captain of intermediate distance voyages 3. AK = Captain on home-going voyages 4. AN = Captain of national trade |
Captain’s ProtestA document prepared by the captain of a vessel on arriving at port. It shows conditions encountered during voyage, generally for the purpose of relieving ship owner of any loss to cargo and shifting responsibility for the reimbursement to the insurance company |
